The reason this meal idea arose? A couple years before we started The Great Courses I attended a workshop given by James Brown and my very friend, Greg DeYoung about how eating three healthy lunches at one meal can be even faster and healthier than making one. He suggested it: Eating three portions once or twice a day gives you 12x fewer Calories (1/2-300kcal vs 0 of 10 calories from protein!)

James' solution? Just get another meal with three small components. That should come in second; in principle we could eliminate everything other than calories so your 4 day diet could become 12 pieces per month. It sounded really appealing (the problem), for instance; if 3 portions didn't add up, the plan's time per person might have decreased, so they added a second large portion if we each lost 5 lb./ year compared to having one serving to feed an eight month baby...
